Entertainment - Hindi(2014)

Review:

Rohit Shetty's movies are written by Farhad-Sajid. Abbas-Mastan's like they are both half brother. He specializes in making jokes at the scene, Rohit Shetty are interesting, colorful and shimmering ways to portray. 'Golmaal' and 'Chennai Express' successful journey until they have mastered this type of entertainment. Rohit Shetty, Farhad-Sajid work closely watched because they are an integral part of the team.

The inner lives of all persons from films that aspire someday sitting on the director's chair. Farhad-Sajid and Akshay Kumar have fanned the desire. Farhad-Sajid Hug the script laid out and the result is 'Entertainment' as unfolded. 'Entertainment', given that it may Rohit Shetty and Sajid Khan's style mixed with an old photostat machine is a Xerox copy, the ink and the black streak come to some text missing.

It is the story of all. He treated his sick father does for a living wage in every way. Then one day he discovers that his real father is someone else. Seemingly her father that he is the son of a wealthy jeweler, who are now settled in Bangkok.Bangkok is reaching her father's death. It also helps to know that they have their assets pet dog named Entertainment. Entertainment all the way to the father's property to achieve consistently fails to diligently remove.

Meanwhile, a similar phenomenon that he would stand in the favor of Entertainment. Entertainment from now intrigues of her cousin Karan Arjun save. The relationship brings people and animals in funny ways 'Entertainment' is reduced to a joke. Although the writer and director laughter, jokes, comic skits and performances of artists of animal matter of humanity, but the 'Entertainment' finally 'crow's laughter "(used in the film) is reduced.

The film has some remarkable characteristics. All the actions in some scenes with dialogue spoken English words are in Hindi. It is the language which has been developed in cities such as Hinglish. The author has used it without any delay. Akshay Kumar mythical scenes and its image are childish regardless of age. It is a kind of acting positive audacity, which comes from deep confidence. Akshay Kumar played devil's advocate director is given without responsibility. Krishna Abhishek has retained the character's vulgarity. His film artists by name spoken dialogue and effects lose its novelty after a few episodes. Johnny Lever, Mithun Chakraborty and Tamanna is no novelty in the characters. Sonu Sood and Prakash Raj characters are left trying unsuccessfully to enter the mold.

Human and animal relationships in the Hindi films have become numerous. 'Haathi Mere Saathi', 'cow and fair', 'Teri Mehrbanian' etc., elephant, cow and mutual relationship of man with the dog is designed in a sensitive way. Despite efforts 'Entertainment' do not wake the same sensation. Especially chosen for the title role Jr. has disappointed. Junior lacked the expression or to capture him.

Aatma Movie Review:

The horror genre is getting increasingly popular with the top ranks in Bollywood. From A-list actors to reputed production houses, the output of horror movies has, all of a sudden, shown an upward trend in recent years. Besides, horror in Hindi films is no longer limited to ghosts or skeletons. It's about projecting the emotion called fear most valiantly.

With the 3D technology making a big splash across the globe, the trend of making horror films in 3D has already caught on in Bollywood. Vikram Bhatt's HAUNTED, DANGEROUS ISHHQ and RAAZ 3 and Ramgopal Varma's BHOOT RETURNS narrated spooky tales in 3D. While I am not against this technology, I am glad Suparn Verma decided against making AATMA in 3D because this one's a psychological thriller -- more of a human drama -- and the 3D glasses would've only acted as a blockade.

First things first, AATMA is *not* the quintessential horror film. It's not about a haunted house or a tormented spirit thirsting for vengeance. It has layers. It has supernatural elements. It tackles an abusive relationship. It's about a strong emotional bonding between a mother and child. Primarily, it's the fight between a woman and her dead husband over their child. An interesting concept without doubt, but what comes across on screen is such an anticlimax!

AATMA narrates the story of a mother who must fight to keep her daughter safe from the ghost of her father. Maya's [Bipasha Basu] peace lies shattered when she discovers that her husband [Nawazuddin Siddiqui] intends to take their daughter, Nia [Doyle], with him to his world. The world of the dead!

To give the credit where it's due, AATMA doesn't resort to appalling, nauseating visuals. It's low on gore, but high on atmosphere and mood. Unfortunately, Suparn presents the age-old beliefs without giving a new spin to the fight between the dead and living. The film is spiked with been-there-seen-that kind of situations. To make matters worse, Suparn uses evocative visuals and an unsettling story to create a spooky atmosphere, but it doesn't deliver any scare. Its biggest shortcoming is, it incorporates a lot of shocks in the narrative, but no real surprises. Yet another inadequate aspect is its resolution, which, ideally, should've been the highpoint. Even the pacing is too slow for a psychological thriller.

Sure, Suparn runs his mind's eye wild in a couple of sequences, but those chunks are few and far between. Cinematography captures the prevalent tension well. The sound quality, the lifeline of this genre, is appropriate. The background score, surprisingly, is not as impactful.

Bipasha tasted blood with RAAZ 3 and in AATMA, she gets to portray the central character yet again: A tormented housewife and a distressed mother. However, unlike RAAZ 3, AATMA doesn't offer her the podium to demonstrate her acting skills, although the talented actress gives her best shot. Nawazuddin, who won laurels in GANGS OF WASSEYPUR and TALAASH last year, forays into mainstream Bollywood with AATMA. Surprisingly, he too doesn't get any scope to prove his credentials. Doyel, the child artist, handles her part wonderfully. Shernaz Patel is alright. Darshan Jariwala is effective. Jaideep Ahlawat gets minimal scope. Shiv Subramaniam doesn't impress.

On the whole, AATMA stands on a weak script. Besides, there are hardly any scares here. Disappointing!

Karuppampatti (2013) - Tamil

 -Tamil-

Karuppampatti (2013) (Tamil) TMCC

 Karuppampatti Movie Review:

Prabhu Raja Cholan, a former associate of director Shankar, has earned his first opportunity to be a storyteller through Karupampatti. The film is said to have been based on some real life incidents and it has been shot in France and rural TN.

Karupampatti is essentially the story of a young NRI attempting to retrace his roots and bestow upon them something, which has been long overdue.

The concept, even if it has been harped on about for years, is bound to strike a chord with the migrant community. The director also plays the family-togetherness card which may please members of the older generation. The treatment of the idea is not at all preachy or sorrowful; in fact there is comedy and jovial characters aplenty, thereby steering clear of the mega-serial effect.

Karupampatti is Ajmal's first big ticket as a lead hero in Tamil and one can sense that he is clearly enthused with the responsibility thrust upon him. He performs with high energy that sometimes borders along theatrical excessiveness. He plays two roles set in different periods with contrasting personalities and he performs with obviousness to enhance the difference. Aparna Bajpai has a sweet smile that she’s made to wear in most of her scenes but her role and scope is rather miniscule.

Jagan and Srinath have more prominence as contributors in the comedy department and their wisecracks and retorts don’t fail to evoke a giggle. The other cast members include character artistes like Balasubramaniam, Devadarshini and Chetan among others who ease through their roles as faithful family members. M.S. Bhaskar too chips in with some comedy in the first half. The international face Alice Tantardini appears only for a brief montage sequence and has little time to make any mark.

The overall production value of the film is quite good, especially in the song sequences that are enhanced with a lot of color and simple yet crafty art design. With the dance masters themselves making appearances in a couple of songs, the choreography is lively. The cinematography by Santhosh Sriram and Sanjeevi Sathyaseelan is quite deft with the usage of hand held work in the Paris sequences and capturing the earthy color of the village.

Prabhu Raja Cholan seems to have his course chartered precisely, to give a jolly ride coupled with a novel message for the whole family but has only let himself down with several inconsistencies. While the story is appreciative of the unity amongst village people he also introduces, for the sake of a fight sequence, a bunch of foul mouthed and misbehaving villagers as goons. There is also an incomplete romance set in the 70s.

By way of comedy and colorful songs, Karupampatti on the whole has a lighthearted and easygoing approach that makes you overlook the timeline and logical lapses and the cinematic liberties that have been taken. Let there be no doubt that this is a full blooded commercial family drama.

All these suggest that if the writing had been more rigid, it could have greatly succeeded in bringing families from far and wide for Karuppampatti.

Moview Review:

The success of his maiden production venture, Engeyum Eppodhum, seems to have boosted Murugadoss's confidence. His Murugadoss Productions in association with Fox Star Studios is ready with their second production Vatthikuchi, another small budget venture that is generating a lot of buzz.

Vatthikuchi is directed by Kinslin and has Anjali in the lead. Incidentally, Anjali was the lead in Engeyum Eppodhum as well and her performance was one of the highlights of the movie. Murugadoss's brother Dileepan debuts as the male lead in Vatthikuchi that is labeled as an urban thriller.

Set in the backdrop of suburban Chennai, the movie is said to focus on the lives of people who travel a long way to the city for their work. The main focus of the movie is said to be share auto travel, the often inexpensive and fast mode of transport for people who depend on public transport for their commutes. Anjali is Meena, a girl who uses share autos to commute while Dileepan is a share auto driver.

Vatthikuchi has Ghibran's music and the movie's soundtrack met with positive reviews since its release in February. Vatthikuchi recently went under the censor scissors and has received U/A certificate, without any cuts. Distributed by Murugadoss Productions, Vatthikuchi is releasing this weekend.

Paradesi (2013) - Tamil

Paradesi 2013 TCRip x264 400MBTMCC

Paradesi Movei Review :

For those who find serious films their cup of tea, this is outstanding cinema from director Bala

Bala is known for his unique style of filmmaking and he has been at the helm of the new wave directors for some time now. From his Sethu days he has come to be known as a man with a remarkable ability to portray reality on screen, even if that reality is harsh at times. Though there are those who criticise his way of filmmaking, he has a legion of admirers, including Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap, who feel he makes movies for the sheer love of it and with the least concern for commercial success.

After burning his finger trying his hand at a ‘so-called’ commercial venture in Avan Ivan, Bala is back to serious stuff, and brings the best out of rookie Atharva, son of late actor Murali, who is looking to make an imprint in cinema. Vedhika and Dhansika, both up-and-coming actors, too have capitalised on the opportunity to showcase their histrionic skills.

The story is about how tea estate workers suffered at the hands of their masters in pre-Independence India. The film opens in Saloor village in the year 1939 and Ottu Porkki alias Rasa (Atharva) is a person who lives a simple life and is drawn towards Angamma (Vedhika).

As drought cripples the village, Rasa and the villagers decide leave the place in search of jobs in a tea plantation. It takes an arduous journey on foot for 47 days to reach the estate. Things aren’t exactly rosy for workers there, as the owners treat them with terrible cruelty and force them to work as bonded labourers.
On the plantation is Maragadham (Dhanshika), mother of two, who works there. The harsh working conditions ruin their health. Rasa tries to escape to meet Angamma, who is pregnant, but is trapped and tortured.

Atharva steals the show with an unexpectedly strong performance. It isn’t the lover-boy role but a serious one and his hard work is evident on screen. Vedhika and Dhanshika get a chance to shine, which doesn’t happen very often in Kollywood these days.

The music by GV Prakash Kumar matches the mood of the film.
If you are serious about serious stuff, Paradesi is your cup of tea, as Bala reigns over it in his inimitable style!

Vishwaroopam Review:

Strangely, I am at loss of words on how to describe this movie. It is certainly not a great movie or anywhere close to Kamal's best. At the same time I wouldn't say he did a bad job with the movie. Its just that nothing much happens in the movie. The entire movie seems like a build up to potential second movie he may or may not release. Specifically in the 2+ hours he has spent on the movie Kamal Hasan  paints a nice picture of life in Afghanistan and the lives of the people there. I thought he brought out a very good capture of the 'human beings' who lived in Afghanistan. He showed that they aren't machines who just killed for pleasure. but were people with thoughts and feelings who are into this because of religion or forces they don't really control. Another area where he did really well was the way he set up the Kathak dancer's effeminate'ness to a splendid retribution moment. It was a mini-movie within itself where you could see him wind this coil up for that specific catharsis moment. I would like to think that the area where he has failed - was the part where the movie had to deliver us the payload. In the sense - what is the payoff to this movie? What the culmination point where it all starts to make sense and all the lose ends are tied together? There is no such point. There is no high or adrenalin rush. Nothing really happens.
For one thing Viswaroopam lacks soul. The key part of a movie that would connect us to the characters and make us feel for them. It has a pretty decent first half where it was building on to something. But then like I said - nothing big really happens. the climax is a whimper and some parts of the second half (where American FBI agent ask some arbit Indian woman for advise on nuclear stuff - as if they couldn't bring in their own experts) was just nonsense. And things like 'Faraday cover' etc could not be pulled off without losing credibility. I was wondering why I didn't expect a soul from - lets say - Thuppakki. I guess Kamal Hasan has a nature of peeping into places in the heart where other people do not look. And it shows when he does so in a half-hast manner. Thuppaakki was much better movie purely because of its simplicity. The story had a clear beginning, middle and an end. It defined the problem being solved correctly and there were no layers. Vishwaroopam lacks that clarity, seems have layers but then doesn't do justice to that. As a viewer I am not engaged.
Lastly, the question of whether someone should be offended by the movie. Kamal Hasan has built or tried to build some sort of a trust with the muslim community over time - partly by openly sympathising with them and partly by criticizing Hinduism to the best of his ability. He has tried to cash in on that trust ticket in this movie and that has sadly backfired. If you are one of those paarpana paradesis who think being an atheist or eating chicken mutton inspite of being a paarpanan is a big 'perumai' - it is quite understandable that you may not get the point of the muslim objection. There exists another world - a very normal world like one in which these kudigaara parpanargal live - where people have not drunk the koolaid of 'irreverence towards religion is cool'. In that world  this movie could be offensive. To me the muslim parts of movie sounded true. But I was thinking in the first few scenes 'no brahmin be it in Chennai  or in New York ever talks like that'. Given that I wouldn't be surprised if the Muslims felt the opposite.

I actually thought the religious parts about muslims in the movie was shown in a positive context - that they were basically god-fearing people who have been misled. But who knows how it appears to them -  they may question the presence of religious rituals in these scenes. I was debating as to why Jayalalitha's government managed to create one problem or the other for Kamal Hasan's release and maybe thought of ascribing a political motive to the ban. But part of me thinks they are doing the sensible thing of playing to  vote-bank politics and let the courts handle it. Its a win-win. They can always claim they banned it and are helpless if courts over turn it. Then I was thinking whether Kamal Hasan was this innocent pioneering artist who was facing 'ahead of his times' type issues. But I could not bring myself to believe that. He has repeatedly made fun of and bullied weaker castes of today's society. Life is a jungle and he is an animal getting mangled by other animals. I have no sympathy for him. This movie  has the potential to be interpreted as offensive. I think it gives people enough grey area to hijack it to their own purpose. And that is as ok as kamal hasan being allowed to make this movie. Both views have an equal chance to duke it out in the movie. Just because you don't think religion is important doesn't mean shit. If you are a kudigaara paarpana thaazhi who takes pride in not wearing poonal and think 'freedom of speech' is non-negotiable, I can help you empathize with the muslim objection. Think of your religion as 'freedom of speech'. If you feel offended that someone uses their religious sentiments to infringe on your religion then you know exactly how they feel when you use your religion to infringe on theirs.

An Afghani Al-Qaeda Jihadi Omar (Rahul Bose), his accomplice Salim (Jaideep Ahlawat) and their international terror network, plots to attack New York with a “Cesium-bomb”. Vishwanath alias Wiz (Kamal Haasan) is a Kathak teacher who lives with his wife Nirupama (Pooja Kumar), a nuclear oncologist, in New York. Nirupama confides with a psychologist that it’s a marriage of convenience that provided her a safe haven for pursuing her Ph.D in the U.S. The age gap between them notwithstanding, she is put off by Vishwanath’s effeminate traits and is attracted to her boss, Deepak (Samrat Chakrabarti). Doubting whether her husband has secrets of his own, she hires a private investigator to trail him. She learns from the private investigator that Vishwanath is not a Hindu but a Muslim. In a sudden turn of events, the investigator gets killed by a member of the terrorist outfit led by Omar. A business card on his wallet gives away Nirupama and the terror group nabs the couple. The outfit operates from a warehouse on the outskirts of the city where the couple is being interrogated.
Vishwanath is involved in a fight with the terrorists at the warehouse and escapes with Nirupama. Omar and Vishwanath have a past, one that takes the story back by almost a decade, to the Al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. What follows is a maze of events that go back and forth in time, unraveling a plot where in the terrorists are accumulating cesium from oncology devices to trigger a blast in New York.
Nirupama is stunned to discover the true identity of her husband Vishwanath, his uncle (Shekhar Kapur), American accomplice Dawkins (Miles Anderson) and the young dancer Ashmita (Andrea Jeremiah) at her husband’s dance school. Vishwanath is revealed to be Wisam Ahmad Kashmiri, a Muslim RAW agent who married Nirupama to investigate Deepak and his boss Omar in connection with a bomb blast in the heart of New York. His mission is to bust the ‘sleeper-cell’ of the Jihadis in the US, which is planning to divert the attention through “capsules” capable of emitting mild nuclear radiation tied to pigeons in New York city while enabling Black (James Babson) to detonate the cesium bomb in the city.
Together, the team try to counter the plans of Omar and his group that could destroy the most of the New York city. In the ensuing events, Vishwanath is arrested by the FBI before being rescued by his uncle and Dawkins is murdered by Salim. Whether Vishwanath along with the FBI were able to stop the calamity to be unfolded forms the rest of the story.
Vishwaroopam was born, after nearly two years of being in production.
The script is taut, though there are some rough edges that could use with some fine-tuning. But having watched the end credits, I am convinced that the loose ends of the film have actually been filmed but will be released in Vishwaroopam 2 (yes, there’s a sequel, but please, this movie must be a hit first before Vishwaroopam 2 can be released).

Thiruthani tamil (2012)Team TMCC

 Thiruthani tamil (2012) Movie Review:

Director Perarasu known for his nomenclature of films based on places is ready with his next offering Thiruthani with his favorite hero Bharath once again after Pazhani. In Thiruthani, Perarasu, apart from being responsible for story, screen play, dialogues and direction has also donned the mantle of a lyricist and a music director.
Perarasu has a template of a story telling that involves an action sequence, romance and sentiment not necessarily in that order and he has religiously followed the same pattern here too. And there are lots of punch dialogues and sermons sprinkled all over Thiruthani.

The story is nothing new; a young man taking it out on all bad elements of the society and attempting to cleanse it with his antics with a military man in tow, a heroine to prance around and a family for sentiment quotient. The subject is not new but if it had been presented in a more interesting and engaging fashion may have rendered different results.

The premise has been milked dry in cinema and the redundancy is irksome. The director appears to have been caught in some kind of time wrap and perhaps this theme would have worked wonders at turnstiles a couple of decades ago.

Bharath as the gym master is convincing and mouths his punch dialogues as vociferously as possible. There is also a monumental exercise in hero building, typical of a commercial potboiler. The character of gym master facilitates the demonstration of his chiseled and bronzed torso. Sunaina looks pleasant and is natural too. However her stylish clothes are antagonistic to her orphanage background.

Rajkiran as the military man is at his usual self and fills the screen. Pandiarajan attempts to chuckle the audience in the limited frames that he appears. We have seen Aashish Vidyarthi in umpteen films in the same role, in the same manner of dialogue delivery and in the same old body language. Appukutty figures in a few initial sequences and Thiruthani must be a film which he must have accepted before he did films that brought him credit for his performance.

The scenes are predictable and there are no twists or turns anywhere. Narrative style is relentlessly old fashioned and formulaic. The film sincerely follows Perarasu’s model without taking a detour anywhere. Trying to find foibles in this story is futile because the film is set for a particular set of audience but Perarasu as director has not satisfied them. The pace and the spunk we saw in his Sivakasi and Thirupachi are missing in Thiruthani.

Songs tuned in by him are nothing spectacular but a couple of them are melodious. And adhering to the rule of overseas locations for song sequences, Thiruthani has also gone out but sadly to the same place for almost all songs. There are scenes on Vijay and Ajith just to satiate their fans.

There is nothing much to discuss about technical aspects in Thiruthani. It is appalling to note a few action sequences lifted straight from a few popular Tamil movies. Some shots are too pixilated. Even for people who just want some kind of a mindless entertainer at the end of a hard day’s work, Thiruthani does not do justice.
